Both comics began their careers with The State, a sketch comedy troupe that they co-founded at NYU in 1988 which went on to have a successful run on MTV. Black and Showalter continued from there to tap the oddball edges of comedy on screen (Stella, Wet Hot American Summer, The Baxter) and pop culture commentary (VH1's "I Love The..." series).
